Fall Concert Series - 2010

PITA

PITA was born in Winnipeg and has lived in Saskatchewan since 1974, with a brief interlude in Ontario. She has five children and four grandchildren, all of whom are music-lovers and musicians. Bell-ringing is one of her latest attempts to try as many musical instruments as possible in the time given her.

This concert begins with a Psalm of Approach, an invitation to all who will listen to approach without fear. This invitation is followed by a mixture of sacred and secular music, chosen for their musicality as well as their wide-ranging origins, from the 15th century to modern day country and western (e.g. “I’m So Lonesome I could die” made popular by Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys, which they performed live on the Health and Happiness Show in 1949, the year I was born). I love the lyrics to this song, so if you know them, sing along while I play, but remember to make allowances for a few minor changes that had to be made to fit the bells’ major key.

The “Two-fold Amen” that will close this concert was written by our Chieftan, Wayne Tunison, and is played in tribute to his talent, his willingness to share his knowledge of the rituals and traditions involved in bell ringing, and his courage for continuing to put his life on the line, so to speak, every time he climbs up to that wonderful tower.

Carol Benesh (Keelo)

One of the more senior apprentices, Carol has been ringing the Darke Memorial Chimes (12 English bells) since 1996.  The tower bells are her first musical instrument.  Carol enjoys the more ‘volunteer’ aspects of belonging to the Regina Bell Ringers, like tours and mentoring the new apprentices.  There are also the tasks of cataloguing the tower music and art, creating and formatting the concert programs & advertisements.  Carol has reordered the accounting with the help of Knox Metropolitan professionals.  Carol discovered early in life her forte of data processing.  Show her a document, file, spreadsheet, database, program, picture, electronic data of any kind, tell her what you want, it becomes information, then knowledge.  It is done.  Time flies for her when she is on the computer as her family can well attest.

Carol has two lovely daughters, Jade and Azure, who are also involved in bellringing and are currently seeking the things in life that they love most (definitely not computer work J).
