Artist's Statement

This performance tries to capture the Victorian spirit of empire and grandeur which we in the former colonies associate with our royalty. The concert contains several Victorian favourites mixed in with several children's songs. The children's songs were chosen from the 19th century concept of Queen Victoria being the "Great Mother" a metaphor which Queen Elizabeth no doubt inherited but evolved into a more mature relationship with her subjects. There is at least one reference to each of the four nations making up Great Britain example Shule Aroon for the Irish. Finally, there is a modern reference to the composer's of today, Pete Townsend and in particular our Regina composer's Thomas Schudel and Larry Peterson. Beethoven's Hymn of Joy is included drawing attention to the European unity which has evolved throughout Queen Elizabeth's reign.
